Current Projects

Shared Virtual Data Centre

YHMAN are currently investigating the feasibility and options to support a shared virtual data centre across the region and were recently invited to present at VMworld Europe 2011, following the Pilot.  Presentation slides can be viewed here.  YHMAN also gave a presentation at the IDC Virtualisation & Cloud Security Conference which is available here.

York University Data Centre

York University are building a new data centre at Heslington East; once this is complete, YHMAN will migrate one of the existing RPoPs to this new location. YHMAN will also be installing additional circuits between York and Hull to ensure that all fibre routes are diverse and resilient.

Huddersfield University RPoP Relocation

Huddersfield University are undertaking a major redevelopment on of a building that currently hosts one of their two YHMAN RPoPs. YHMAN are arranging for fibre, optical and routing equipment to be migrated to the new location, via an interim solution, ensureing that diversity is maintained between the two RPoPs.

Multicast

YHMAN are working towards deploying Multicast to remote sites that are connected to YHMAN via Telco leased circuits.

Unicast

YHMAN are working towards offering IPv6 Unicast resiliently to both Universities and remote sites connected via leased Telco circuits.

YHMAN Optical Transmission Network Refresh

YHMAN are upgrading the South Ring to be 40G capable. This will allow for deployment of additional 4G and 10G wavelengths offering resilient, low latency, high bandwidth channels.

Remote Site Resilience

YHMAN have developed two turnkey solutions to offer resilient IP services to remote sites connecting via leased Telco circuits. Several institutions have shown and interest and YHMAN are currently progressing a resilient option for York St John University.

Public Sector Networks

YHMAN are currently investigating the feasibility and options to support additional public sector networks across the region.

Network Monitoring Development

YHMAN are in the process of building a second in-house network management/monitoring solution that will provide resilience to the existing systems.

Completed Projects

Bradford University RPoP Relocation

YHMAN arranged for fibre, along with optical and routing equipment, to be migrated to a new RPoP location.

10G Ethernet South Ring Upgrade

YHMAN have upgraded circuits on the South Ring to provide Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield Universities with 10G links back to Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan Universities respectively.

YHMAN Beacon

As part of the IPv6 Multicast Project, YHMAN have upgraded the Multicast beacon to the DBeacon software which will also support IPv6 Multicast. YHMAN status can be viewed at http://www.beacon.ja.net/cgi/matrix.pl.

40G Capable Optical Central Ring

YHMAN have completed the installation of a new 40G capable, resilient, optical ring around Leeds that can offer many low latency, high bandwidth channels.

Netsight 2

The Netsight 2 deployment completed 2009/10. All YHMAN sites can now be monitored via the new Netsight.

IPv6 Mulitcast

YHMAN have deployed new Cisco IOS software and hardware across the YHMAN core that cans upport IPv6 Multicast in hardware using both SSM and ASM with embedded RP.

Hull University Additional 1G

YHMAN have deployed additional bandwidth around the East Ring to deliver a 2G resilient connection to Hull University.

York University Additional 1G

YHMAN have deployed additional bandwidth around the East Ring to deliver a 2G resilient connection to York University.

IOS Upgrades

YHMAN have installed the latest stable release of the Internet Operating System on core equipment to ensure they are capable of supporting all Janet Partner Agreement service requirements.

IPv4 Multicast Resilience

YHMAN have deployed IPv4 Multicast onto the YHMAN network resiliently from the YHMAN core to JANET SJ5. YHMAN can also now offer resilient IPv4 Multicast to Universities.

IPv6 Unicast

YHMAN have deployed IPv6 Unicast resiliently within the YHMAN core and to the JANET SJ5 network.

Leeds Metropolitan University Fibre Rerouting

YHMAN rerouted several, key fibre, links around the Leeds Metropolitan University area prior to building demolitions on campus. As part of this project, an additional, fully diverse, resilient link was installed between the Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan Regional Network Entry Points.

NYNet Connection

YHMAN have configured a 1G connection from the YHMAN core network to the NYNet MPLS network, enabling YHMAN to offer end to end, Layer 2 connections crossing NYnet.

South Yorkshire Colleges Network (SYCoNET)

The network was upgraded be adding additional resilience within the SYCoNET core and also providing dual diverse 1G connections from SYCoNET to YHMAN.

UKLight Bandwidth and Access

YHMAN have deployed a new Juniper router to terminate the new 10G UKLight connection from JANET and split services off onto the YHMAN optical transmission network, allowing delivery of low latency, high bandwidth services at any point within YHMAN.

YHMAN Core Supervisor Upgrades

YHMAN have replaced 24 Supervisor Engines in switches, at 16 core RPoPs, to facilitate the provision of the latest services and provide the ability to upgrade the speed of the core links.

Leeds University Additional 1G

YHMAN deployed additional bandwidth around the Central Ring to deliver a 2G connection to Leeds University resiliently. Part of this additional bandwidth used the new resilient, 40G capable, optical ring and was part of the refresh of the YHMAN optical transmission network.

York University RPoP Build

YHMAN have built a second RPoP at York University to provide a resilient connection model for the site.
